In the history of civil aviation there are a lot of cases of pilots (or copilots) who committed suicide by their planes. If we quote the year and the number of the dead, we have 1976:11 dead people – 1982:24 – 1944:44 – 1997:104 – 1999:217 – 2013:27. But the most emblematic case for our research is the one of the flight MH 370 of the Malaysia Airlines which disappeard in the Indian Ocean on 8th March 2014 without leaving any trace. Actually there is no certain evidence that the Boeing 777 disappeared because of the pilot’s suicide, but among all the possible hypotheses, till today, this is the most probable one. Compared with the other cases what might really seem incompehensible is the fact that, according to this hypothesis, the pilot, after convincing the copilot with a pretext to leave the cockpit, barricated himself inside it and before carrying out his insane project he might have depressurized the cabin of the plane choking to death all the 238 passengers and the members of the crew.
Once he realized he was the only one to survive inside the plane Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the pilot, went on flying for four hours with the dead peolpe on board trying to avoid the radars of the control towers and eventually succeeding in disappearing without leaving any trace. At last he might have moored without destroying the aircraft. So the Boeing 777 should subsequently have sunk entire as it was becoming a steel coffin and no wreckage was ever recovered.
Certainly Zaharie Ahmad Shah’s suicide on the Boeing 777 of the Malaysia Airlines is completely different from Andreas Lubitz’s on his Airbus 320. Lubitz, as he would have told his ex fiancée in advance, makes any effort so that everybody can remember him and somehow enter history. Zaharie Ahmad Shah wanted only to escape from the radars and after all from the world together with his 238 victims, without leaving any trace.
And yet despite the differences we think that every suicide, included plane ones, is based on depression mediated by a genetic feedback or negative retroaction mechanism. What is different among the two plane suicides is that in Lubitz’s case the social aim of the suicide would seem more evident, in Ahmad Shah’s the intention is much more hidden, just as hidden he wanted the plane, piloted by him, to be for ever. In both cases, since a very remarkable reduction of human beings was caused by the action of only one subject, there might be an unconscious, biological regulating purpose, whose target is to limit human overpopulation and all its consequences. It might be that when pilots welcome passengers on their aircraft and realize how many people they have to move from one side to the other of the world, wonder whether all these huge movements are based on real motives or on the contrary all these persons move like loose cannons mostly without any purpose. In the final part of the movie Grand Hotel (1932) we can see the revolving door of the hotel rotating vortically and hear a voice-over commenting Grand Hotel, people who are people going, everything aimlessly[1]; therefore might pilots on seeing such a mass of peopole moving around aimlessly think the same?
Besides we don’t have to forget the environmental impact, in terms of emissions, of a plane in a transoceanic flight. Of course it will have been easier for Lubitz to convince himself that his heroic-social mission of pseudo denunciation of pilots’ job conditions should have found some supporters; but how could Ahmad Shah have hoped that his intent of reducing human population should have been understood or anyhow not strictly rejected as a Nazi ideology[2]? This might have caused the pilot of the Boeing 777 to get the plane disappeared in a way that every hypothesis about the event might not be proved.
How may I be sure or at least hope that the theses of “The Intelligent Virus”, according to which the present epidemic of suicides is a part of a genetic feedback or negative retroaction mechanism mediated by depression, may be understood or only be accepted, at least as possible? I’d like to point out that I’m not supporting this mechanism but, simply, on studying nature, I drew my conclusions about the causes of the epidemic of suicides. On the other hand since when 20 years ago I started studying the phenomenon I haven’t yet found an alternative hypothesis as good. So I’m not saying Ahmad Shah’s action is right or to be imitated, but, as a doctor, I know perfectly that we can find the right therapy only with a right diagnosis, while, on the contrary, therapies given through wrong diagnoses can do but make the illness itself worse.
Besides I’m not convinced at all the pilot of the Malaysia Airlines was convinced of the meaning of his action, but he may have been an unconscious instrument of nature trying by any means possible to prevent life from disappearing on the planet earth. In the same book it’s clearly explained a virus can’t be considered intelligent in itself but it acts as an unconscious agent of nature and by mediating the intelligence, it itself becomes intelligent. Unfortunately theories based on biology, which consider man inserted in an ecological system, not only like other animals but all living beings, collide deeply with the sociological[3] interpretation of reality that is active till today if not prevailing in general culture.
[1] Grand hotel: always the same people who are…..people going….everything aimlessly…”(Dott. Otternschlag)
[2] Hitler was convinced that by eliminating the Hebrews(final solution) would have saved Germany and besides himself, he could convince of all this a remarkable part of a whole nation.
[3] the sociological interpretation of reality which was born, in 1968, on the wave of youth protest and in Italy of the Student Movement had a lot of consequences. Accepted as it was, without any criticism by the the left-wing culture, it has been for years and is till nowadays the only one method of interpreting reality in competition with the psychological-psychoanalytical interpretation.
So still today there are those who interpret suicide and mass homicides as a consequence of capitalism even coining the word late capitalism to recall the ghosts of the past: to drive them towards the ultimate act is the sense of inadequacy as regards their social expectations, their fixed targets, the idea of themselves they project on the wall of their own Platonic cave, the furnishings of which have been kindly offered by the sponsors of late capitalism society. Therefore capitalism and mental diseases, neoliberalism and suicide are correlated and spread about at the same pace…….(Dagospia Morti di Fama). So we can understand how theories based on animal biology are exactly the opposite of sociological and/or psychoanalitical ones and perhaps just for this difficult to be accepted.
