Mad Man

In front of HIV intelligence and the coherence of its behaviour man reactions, generally speaking, don’t seem so rational and efficacious (mad man).

A quite wrong way was the one of destroying, among so many trees, also a specimen of Calophillum Lanigerum a group of researchers at the University of Illinois had discovered it owned a juice with effective medicinal powers against AIDS in its limph.

After coming back to Malaysia to take some more specimens of the tree, researchers discovered it had been cut down and didn’t find any others with similar properties

If we paraphrase a famous commercial we can say “AIDS, if you know it you don’t avoid  it”: some fellows have deliberately unprotected sexual intercourses with seropositive partners. The cases are so many that the Institute of Infective Diseases and the Psychology Department at the University of Bologna have included them all in the so called “ Samos Syndrome”[1].

According to the psychologists at the University of Bologna people suffering from Samos Syndrome – mostly depressed women – “could damage themselves in a socially acceptable, in their opinion, and apparently heroic way, by making their self-damaging behaviour, that is unprotected sex with a HIV positive man, a sort of a seraphic dedication to help  suffering people, but above all a way of receiving and giving extreme love”.

Somthing analogous is happening among gay communities in San Francisco: a research made by Ron Stall, a Professor of the Centre for AIDS study and prevention at the university of that city, asserts the increase of HIV infections is dramatic and the perspectives for the future are even more disconcerting.

Seropositivity

In 1982 18% of gay people in the city had caught HIV. In 1985, after enormous efforts of  gay community to propagandize safe sex, there was less than a new seropositive every 100 homosexuals in one year.

All of a sudden, in the last few years, this number doubled and among gays under 25 years of age even quadrupled.According to Professor Stall a bigger and bigger number of homosexuals has stopped taking precautions and has started again with a wild promiscuity and unprotected sex as it was previously.

Another study of the Health Department in San Francisco asserts:” Today one gay out of three has risky sex, above all anal intercourses without a condom”.

After burying a great deal of lovers and friends many gays have become fatalistic and therefore in this case psychiatrists tell about “ sexual suicides”. The cause should be psychological: homosexuals in San Francisco can’t stand the sight of death and pain surrounding and threatening them; so it might be the same to prevent destiny. If we consider the times of survival among HIV infection, full-blown AIDS and death, it’s better to live one day as a lion than a hundred years as a sheep.

Sexual suicides

According to the New York Times, in a report entitled “the second AIDS wave in the gay capital”, gay identity and AIDS are so linked that a lot of men do everything to contract the virus and feel, more, a gay.

Always speaking about human reactions to HIV, it seems apparently difficult to interpret the desire for revenge of some persons when they discover they are seropositive.

At Pelotas, a small town in South Brazil, some seropositive homosexuals and transvestites established a sort of an AIDS club: after luring their clients and having unprotected intercourses with them, the day after they send the victims a message informing them about what had happened.

The piece of news was reported by Angelo Langone, a psychologist who is engaged with psychiatric assistance to drug addicts over there.

A similar case occurred in Israel: a forty-six year old homosexual, Ieshaiahu Damner, an Engineering Professor at Haifa University, discovers his seropositivity has turned into AIDS. Since that moment he has thought up a devilish plot: nobody knows about his disease and he tries to have so many sexual intercourses as possible and even he prostitutes himself free with Arabs and Hebrews provided that his partners don’t make use of a condom. Meticulously he notes names and surnames, addresses and telephone numbers of customers and lovers in a register. When he is found killed in a pool of blood, nobody has any doubts about the motive.

Similar episodes have happened many times. In Ireland a red haired girl of twenty-five years of age should have spread the virus to eighty persons. The character of the priest, a Michael Kennedy, who should have received the woman revenger’s confession can’t be missing in that catholic country. All this was publicly denounced by father Kennedy during a sermon in the church

In Italy woman revengers should be more than one. Their age is between twenty and thirty-five years and they are compelled to prostitute themselves and go on  with their job so that they can take drugs. Some men who are victims of HIV and AIDS can’t find any other comfort to their pain but take revenge on people like themselves. Certainly they knew well the risk they were running with unprotected intercourses, yet once infected by HIV they take it out on the rest of mankind. Simple wickedness? Maybe it isn’t like that[2].

[1] In the Middle Ages on the Greek isle of Samos an imperial edict let the guests of the local leper colony and the healthy inhabitants of the spot get married.

[2] It’s recent the case of the thirty year old Roman  young man who, seropositive since 2006, intentionally infected six women with HIV after luring them  on chat. The Public Prosecutor who is in charge with the case accused him of very serious damages and established a preventive detention in prison.
