Defense attorneys, educationists, psychologists enter into action, all of them ready to assert the best thing to do is to set them free. But for the first time also voices out of the usual cooperative – justificationalist chorus are heard. Erika and Omar’s peers ask, for the two, a sentence that can give them the sense of limit and above all Livia locci, the Public Prosecutor, in her indictment, can, for the first time, induce the victims to speak.
To do this she reads some verses from Eugenio Montale’s poem ” The first January ” and dedicates them to Erika’s mother:” I know we can live not existing, emerged out of a wing, a backdrop, an outside which doesn’t exist, if ever anybody saw it, I know we can exist not living, with roots uprooted by every wind….”.Also in her death, the magistrate says, this woman was “obscured”by those who survived and killed her.” But Susy Cassini – Livia Tocci says – died twice as a mother: as Erika’s mother because, since she was a woman of a deep ethicality and tried to transfer some values and her example to her daughter, she didn’t succeed in; as Gianluca’s mother, because, against her will, on that evening she couldn’t, in the first instinct of a mother, protect her pet.
Apart from this only one exception, in every news story attention is addressed to the murder, while the victim, after being physically eliminated, suffers from the extreme affront of the ” damnatio memoriae”[1].
While a great deal of lawyers, psychologists, priests, journalists ready to find every justification possible for the behaviour of criminals, exalt their personalities, suggest them to become subjects of books or movies, may be found, nobody puts in only one good word for the poor victim guilty, in our opinion, to have performed the role of the loser.
In our competitive society, between the role of a murderer and the one of a victim, beyond trivial hypocrisies, most people identify themselves with the “winning” character of a murderer
The aggressive genes of the murderer obviously prevail on the peaceful genes of the depressed victim and, unless aggressive genes are induced to clash one another [2], their number constantly increases in society only because myths are eliminated by them.
As we have already seen, the war of a traditional kind had the function of eliminating the genes of aggressivenes through the elimination of their survival machine represented by the most aggressive individuals.
In confirmation of what above mentioned there is the episode“Say yours”from Alan Ford’s comics. After being introduced as a showgirl by a cynical presenter and swinging a long knife, Erika sings a song dedicated to mum according to the refrain of the homonymous song [3] “ mum my knife flies only for you, mum as soon as I catch you I’ll cut your throat.
Always in the same episode Erika introduces herself like that: “….I’m an animator of parties, I sing, dance, laugh, if necessary I kill, too: and again to those who want to hire her as a killer:…..now I’m in a pause, later I have to go and kill one who didn’t pay me, then I have many more I can’t say about.
I must kill my boyfriend’s uncle, then I will even kill him, this is free, there is nothing to do before the end of the month.
Also Pietro Maso had been, in his turn, the protagonist of comics,
From comics to reality the step is short and episodes of patricides-matricides (parents’ murders), mostly mothers, follow one another at an increasing rate.
The beginning is with a couple who try to stab to death the girl’s mother, then an impressive series of cases follow, the last of them[4], at present, is the one of a twenty-year-old girl from Merano who, after stabbing to death her parents tried to kill her sister with the same system, too.
A new event for Italy is the confirmation on appeal of the sentence of 16 years for Erika Di Nardo and 14 years for Omar, her fiancè.
The explanations of the psychologists and the defenses of the attorneys didn’t convince the judges about mental incompetence of the two.
[1]In ancient Rome perpetrators of particular crimes and above all public personalities who, according to those who remained had sulled themselves with peculiar faults, were condemned to damnatio memoriae, that is the removal of their names from any document or epigraph so that not even their memory should remain.
[2] It should be very interesting, obviously we are talking of a paradox, to shut up Pietro Maso, Erika and Omar together with other people like them in the same room and see the result of the experiment.
[3] By C.A. Bixio and B. Cherubini (1940). It was sung by famous singers like Beniamino Gigli, Claudio Villa. Luciano Tajoli, Nunzio Gallo.
