Scientists’ latest news tell about the melting, quicker and quicker, of the polar cap( melting glaciers). Two American scholars, after being back from an arctic expedition, found, instead of the expected 2 metre cap, a thin layer of ice, a very fragile one. The thing is even more surprising if we think, till six months before, the cap was still entire and this lets us suppose that the heating of the temperature is causing the melting glaciers at a speed quite superior to the predictions. What scientists found is an inner sea of about one mile diameter inside the zone surrounding the centre of the Pole, overflown by a thick flock of sea gulls feeding on plankton: the latter could proliferate thanks to the filtering of sun rays through the thin glacier, supplying food and support to birds.

All this is at least unusual since usual temperatures of the North Pole don’t allow these species to live at such latitudes. According to McCarty, a Harvard oceongrapher and a member of the expedition, they are inconfutable signs of the fact that the globe is undergoing a very quick heating because of the greenhouse effect, caused by pollution.

Some months ago a group of Norwegian scientists had already foreseen that the greenhouse effect would cause the melting of the glaciers of the Pole within the end of the century.” But this time an alarm bell must really ring: last time the Pole melted was in the Eocene” – Mckenna, a palentologist of the New York American Museum of Natural History who took part in the expedition as well, said – “This is certainly the prelude to profound environmental upsettings our planet, maybe, isn’t ready to face”.

The increasing frequency with which huge ice blocks get detached from polar platforms confirms these future catastrophic sceneries.

The metaphor of the Titanic[1] is becoming harsh reality. The last one is the iceberg C-16, a mass of ice 10 times larger than the isle of Manhattan, detached from the Platform of Ross in the Antarctica. The dimensions are 48 kilometres for 18,4. The zone where the iceberg formed,which is situated in the side of the Antarctica nearer Australia and New Zeland, is one of the two areas of the continent where the detachment of ices is mostly registered.

Nostradamus’s prophecies and forecasts coincide with the predictions of modern scientists: the margin of uncertainty about the times and the quantitative and qualitative features of future events is identical.

The scientific method used is diffrent. Nostradamus asserts God has inspired him through astronomical observations. He makes use of a method, astronomy, which was considered good in those days, so as present scientists use meteorology that, as we have seen, isn’t without mistakes at all. The same computerized models aren’t reliable.

What we are interested in is that Nostradamus in 1500 and present scientists in 2000 tell about future dangers of drought and floods. The use of these predictions was and is difficult and contradictory. As much the numerous natural catastrophes of recent times would make us think of their exactness, spreading all men the consciousness of the future risks included in prophecies so as in predictions seems to be much more complicated.

[1] The shipwreck of the Titanic because of an iceberg was used by us as a metaphor for the arrogance and the superficiality of man who challenges nature to the bitter end. In that case the arrogant man was shipwrecked, that is he was submerged by nature he had challenged.

Another metaphor, concerning melting glaciers, caused by the rise in temperature, is the one of the finding of skeletons in the Alps where the ice is melting.After finding the posts excavated in the rock along the slopes of Marmolada by the Italian soldiers, and the”the city of the ice” carried out by Kaiserjaeger, in the first world war, on 21^st August 2000 a skeleton of a soldier who died in that period, appeared out of a glacier of Adamello in Trentino. In September 1999, on the Trentine glacier of Presanella, another skeleton of a soldier with his hat and equipment had appeared. The year before two more skeletons, one belonging to an Italian soldier, the other to a soldier of the Austro-Hungarian army had been found in the same zone. Ice melting shows us, metaphorically, the future of the planet: a skeleton!
