[1] The examples, besides the ones already mentioned, are very many. Pius XII, whose predictions, so unknown as exact, have revealed over time, tells about the “threat of waters”. Few people know that Pope, who has been so contested, foresaw all the events of the last 50 years of history (of the XX century): from the Second World War to the collapse of the Berlin Wall, from transgenic food to the big migrations in the end of the millennium[2].
When in 1951 he spoke of the flood in Polesine, he said: “The catastrophe in Polesine should be an alarm bell…on the contrary the threat of waters will become more and more worrying”.
In 1954 Pius XII stated: “The craving for profit will drive to the destruction of many natural heritages, causing problems the seriousness of which will emerge over time”.
It was the time in which people started speaking about the destruction of tropical forests and P. Hurandos, a Brazilian scientist, reminded the 6% of oxigen production and the 24% of fresh waters come from tropical forests:” The results of this wicked exploitation will appear only in about fifty years”.
Pius XII’s prophetic tendency culminared on 2nd December 1954, when he told one of his collaborators he had seen God. Concerning this the Pope wrote some notes about that vision and sealed them in an envelope where he wrote on: “To be opened only after my death”.
Later the letter was actually opened but John XXIII thought it right, so as for the “Secret of Fatima”, not to make the content known. This second little mystery was called the mystery of St. Bibbiana, after the name of the Saint church celebrates on 2nd December, the day of the Pope’s vision[3].
Pius XII’s “predictions” concern the demographic problem: “An increasing number of Asiatic people, above all Chinese, will press upon the frontiers of industrialized countries, above all European and economies that once were thriving will be in trouble“.
How serious the problem of the demographic pressure of poor countries on rich ones may be, we are living through in Italy in the latest years.
Just when I was completing this chapter[4] Catholic church decided to reveal the third secret of Fatima.
On that occasion Don Gabriele Amorth, the priest exorcist who has been studying the dossier of Fatima for half a century, had said to the journalists of the Messaggero:” If in Monday’s[5] text there weren’t anything sharp I’d have some doubts about its completeness”.
In spite of Don Amorth’s and Vittorio Messori’s worries the revelation of the secret was a real flop. According to what Cardinal Ratzinger explained: all the sense of the famous secret would be but: “Future isn’t determined in an unchangeble way at all”. Though, according to catholics, what the Pope declares through his representatives is incontestable, a person with an average intelligence is induced to wonder why such a long waiting to reveal something quite trivial.
It would seem spontaneous to consider true even the words of Ali Agca, the Pope’s attacker who was sentenced to life imprisonment and later transferred to a Turkish jail in Ankara. After calling Vatican “the House of the Devil” Agca asserts: “…But the Pope changed the third secret, Vatican didn’t tell the truth….Vatican has become spectator of wrongs and cruelty in the world…And Sister Lucy is only a hostage”.
[1] The first bombing of Rome took place on 19th July 1943, during the second world war, by United States bombers. St. Laurence was the most damnaged quarter by the first bombing of the Allies, the most ruinous one ever effected on Rome, together with Tiburtino, Prenestino, Casilino, Labicano, Tuscolano and Nomentano. The 4,000 bombs( about 1,060 tons ) released over the city caused about 3,000 dead people and 11,000 wounded, 1,500 dead people and 4,000 wounded only in the quarter of St. Laurance. When the bombing ended Pope Pius XII visited the damnaged zones and blessed the victims on the Piazzale of Verano.
[2] And even more in the first two decades of this new millennium.
[3] An extraordinary vision by the Pope. Cardinal Tedeschini, the papal legate at the celebrations of the shrine of Fatima(Portugal), told that in October 1950 Pius XII, while walking alone in the Vatican gardens, saw three times, enduring its brilliance without any pain, the sun while turning into a silver disk and starting revolving round itself. Beams of light with iridescent colours were projected in every direction: the same wonderful phenomenon that was seen by a lot of people several years ago, just in Fatima.
