Economy, new Golden Calf of modern times, has swept away any divinity from Olympus. Science, as it’s subdued to economy, begins to show isolated signs of intolerance and rebellion is already spreading among some scientists, its worshippers.
Unlike the followers of the ” New Age” who wish an improbable return to the past, some scientists still think, with a sincere faith, of their religion and on seeing other collegues as slaves of economy, they regret and long for rebellion. Criticism raised from inside against science impartiality is bigger and bigger and above all against the real advantages its technological applications can bring to mankind. One of the fields where this “criticism from inside ” is more strong and courageous is the one of environment. For some time people have been talking a lot about greenhouse effect.
In the atmosphere, besides oxygen, there are steam, carbon dioxide and, in minimal extent, methane and nitrogen protoxide. These gases prevent sun radiant energy from being completely refracted by the earth causing the so called greenhouse effect: the trapping of a part of sun radiant energy in the atmosphere. Till today the greenhouse effect has had an essentially positive function: in fact, without it, the temperature on the earth should be lower than 10 degrees centigrade. Owing to the increase of carbon dioxide emission caused by the use of combustible fossils, oil, coal and natural gases, the greenhouse effect increases and the earth temperature with it.
The USA are responsible for carbon dioxide emissions for 23%, UE for 22%, developing countries 28%. In poor countries many carbon oxide emissions are caused by the cut and burn system: the need of some more land to be cultivated urges poor peasants to burn forests to turn them into fertile fields.
The catastrophe of the fire cloud that has covered whole Indonesia for months was just the consequence of the many forests set on fire in Sumatra and Borneo.
Temperature increase becomes, in its turn, responsible for climate changes and the relative consequences of these few years: hurricanes, typhoons, seaquakes and rains exceptionally violent if compared with the past follow one another inceasingly.
New Guinea covered with the huge waves of the seaquake Tsunami, the Yang-Tze in flood, el Nino with its floods in Europe and sudden droughts in Brazil, Indonesia and Central Africa are phenomenons which are more and more frequent in these few years.
To have an idea about their exceptionality and importance, it’s enough to think 60% of insurance premia, paid in 1997, concerned victims of natural catastrophes. “What would have happened if the so many flood victims of the Yang-Tze had been insured?” – London Lioyd and Geneva Suisse Reassurance wondered. The most important consequence of temperature increase is nevertheless represented by melting glaciers and the consequent raising of sea level.
The Titanic tragedy is an eloquent metaphor. It was built at the beginning of last century as the biggest and safest ship of all times and represented the extreme challenge of man and progress to nature. Just like the Titans who, after being defeated by Jupiter, were thrown down from the sky, the Titanic, after being defeated by nature in the shape of a gigantic iceberg, was thrown down into the depth of the Ocean.
Since then many years have passed, the XX° century is over, but only today the metaphor of the Titanic shows all its predictive value. There would be evidence of melting glaciers everywhere, from Antartica to Himalaya, from Greenland to the Dolomites.Icebergs, twice larger than Liguria, might come off, at any moment, the zone of South Pole known as Larsen B.
As a consequence of melting glaciers, sea level should rise two millimetres every year: cities like Venice, New York, archipelagos like the Maldive Islands, might disappear in the future because submerged by water.
Sudden climate changes cause, in animal world, the disappearance of useful species like birds and frogs which feed on insects, and the proliferation of harmful species. Parasites, like ticks and mosquitos, increase everywhere and become so aggressive as to turn into dreadful man killers. Like in London in 1600, mouse alarm has returned in some cities of the world: in New York Rudolph Giuliani, the mayor, after applying his zero tolerance method against rodents, increasing dizzily, finally admitted he had been defeated and at present nine or ten mice[2] for inhabitants are estimated in the American metropolis.
Coral colonies which are considered the greatest existing living forms, after working hundreds thousands years to build their calcareous skeletons, die because of the temperature increase of the sea over 20°. A metaphor of the future on the earth: red, yellow, green, all the wonderful coral colours disappear.
[1] In New Orleans the legendary French quarter is devastated by millions of “formosan” termites. The latter can destroy the historical constructions of the city by escavating tunnels in the plaster, plastic, asphalt, even in the cables of high voltage and in coffee machines.
