Also Nostradamus defines this ability as human: “prophet is him who, my son, can see things far away from the natural knowledge of all creatures”[1], but later, even if he admits there are people who can predict the future in a natural way, he asserts that only God can infuse this talent into men ” I don’t pretend to state this ability (a natural one) of seeing in the future cannot be applied by other people. I affirm that the perfect knowledge of events can’t be obtained without a divine inspiration. The whole inspiration has its main impulse from God the Creator, then from the fate and finally from nature”[2].
” But when God is the one who inspires men”the great problem how to make use of these messages appears.
Men who are inspired, in trouble between God’s omnipotence and the ineptitude of their fellow men, are afraid of revealing what God predicted them ” I wanted to point out future events with obscure sentences, sometimes by making use of a language more complicated than prophetic: I chose to do like that not to shock the frail readers of the future centuries and he reminds what is written in the sacred texts: You concealed these things from the erudite and the wise, that is from powerful people and kings and you revealed them to humble and poor people”[3].
Owing to this Nostradamus’s centuries have had, over the centuries, a lot of interpretations so as to become a real, inexhaustible, literary source.
Thousands of books and booklets have been written over the centuries above all about the period which, from time to time, was supposed some of the quatrains referred to.
One, particularly, number 72, told exactly about month and year: July 1999[4] and the relative interpretations were a lot.
After that date people realized that the quatrain had no correspondence with the events of that period.
Nostradamus’s predictions, always in the letter to Cesare, his son, were more precise and perfectly corresponding with what happened later. ” Since today I’ve estimated that before 177 years,3 months and 11 days, world population will fall because of epidemics and floods, besides wars and widespread poverties which will reduce, a lot, people who can work the fields”.
Punctually after a century and a half, climatic events, plague, wars and poverty reduced world population of about one third.Yet in this case, more than a prophecy, Nostradamus’s is a prediction of a scientist who had a deep knowledge of the problems of his time. During the plague epidemic that happenrd in Lyons in 1544, while everybody tried to run away, Nostradamus went to that city intentionally in spite of the risks of any kind that people, besides contagion, might have run in a situation of a complete social anarchy. He had been acting in Lyons for 270 days without any help and personal defence, completely alone.
At first he studied symptoms and known remedies. Afterwards he devoted himself to test new medicines. He wasn’t at all afraid of seeing sick and dying people personally or meeting all those who asked him for help.
Finally he elaborated a medicine the compound of which, together with the description of the plague in Aix-en Provence, may be found in an unknown booklet he wrote[5].
The components of the compound were to be: cypress essence, Florence iris, clove oil, calamus, aloe. The solution was to be compounded with the powder that was got from the grinding of petals of about 300 roses gathered at dawn. However the composition of the medicine may, nowadays, seem absurd, yet the medicine, together with advice on hygiene and prophylaxis, stopped the plague and got miraculous recoveries.
Nostradamus knew the evolution of an epidemic very well and since he had probably identified the main causes: poverty, promiscuity and filth, he knew that, if the latter should go on, the disease would punctually have come back.
Likewise, since he knew the causes of wars, he could foresee that the latter would have occurred regularly and besides he considered diseases, wars and famines in their function of reducing factors of human population.
Therefore it was possible for him to predict what would happen “in 177 years” (a number clearly metaphorical).
Nostradamus makes another explicit forecast to Cesare, his son, he clearly considers more mature than “the frail readers of the future centuries”: “I realize that in the world, before the final conflagration, there will be a lot of floods, so that there will be no regions which won’t be flooded and everything will die for long time, ethnographies and topographies. Famines and drought will precede and follow these floods in many countries….”. What is happening now even if in a reduced way and according to the seer it will happen in the future in a more ana more intense way till real natural catastrophes.
