Human Papillomavirus 2°
First of all I discovered some other colleagues in different parts of the world were starting thinking the existence of Human Papillomavirus environmental sources were possible. In favour of this hypothesis various cases of genital condylomata in children without any evidence of sexual abuses are reported[1],[2],[3],[4]. It was confirmed also by all a series of observations HPV can live in the evironment out of its hosts.
We know Papaviruses ( among them Human Papillomavirus) are a group of particularly stable agents and can remain live in water for long periods[5]. We must say also some other viruses and particularly Picornavirus, Adenovirus and Reovirus can resist in water long time. The viral contamination of waters has been demonstrated both with microbiologic researches and epidemiological studies: the waters of swimming pools or generally waters which are used for recreational activities are differently populated with many types of microorganisms among them viruses[6].
Recently some particles of a diameter inferior to 2 millimicrons have been identified in the open ocean. The living components of these particles are viruses, heterotrophic and photoautotrophic bacteria besides small eukaryotic cells[7]. The clinical consequences of this contamination are evident either in animals or in man. 90% of the turtles in the Californian sea are affected by the so called cauliflower cancer appearing like a series of excrescences on the legs, head and neck of reptiles. At the end of the eighties cases were few and not so serious, today they are a lot and incurable. In fact the cancer proliferation prevents the movements of the legs and neck which are necessary to fill and empty these animals’ lungs. The piece of news is given by the researchers of the Hidden Harbour Marine Environmental Project and Turtle Hospital of Marathon Key. What we are interested in is the cause of the cancer: the virus of the skin fibropapilloma closely related to HPV.
According to researchers environmental pollution is generally associated with the remarkable presence of the virus in waters so causing the disease. The pathogen virulence is such that the epidemic has crossed the Straits of Panama and the cancer has affected besides the turtles of Barbados also the ones living at the Hawaiian Islands. The viral origin of the pathology was confirmed by Elliot Jakobson of the Veterinary School at Florida State University.
The mysterious disease which is slaughtering finners in the Mediterranean Sea, according to the biologists at Ajaccio University, is a virus of the measles.
The clinical synptoms of the contamination of re-creation waters by the human Papillomavirus are generally well-known.
Everybody knows how easy may be to catch warts[8] particularly on our feet in a swimming pool. For this reason it’s always suggested to wear sandals to walk along the edge of the pools and in the showers where HPV hides more frequently and in great quantities. On the contrary what few people know is this happens because HPV, like other viruses, is resistant to the chlorine treatment used for the waters of swimming pools.
Survey normal systems to establish the hygiene of these waters after the chlorine treatment are based on the presence of enterobacteria or at most enteroviruses, which are usually more sensitive than HPV to the disinfection with chlorine. Man activity and his density are in synergy in the propagation of a virus.
With regard to this I think it’s useful to remind that water was changed twice a day in the swimming pools of Caracalla thermae in ancient Rome, while in our days’ swimming pools the same water remains even for one month or more.
The virus can’t reproduce outside its own host (animal or man), but it keeps living as long as it passes into a new host[9]. Environmental contamination doesn’t concern only waters.
A report of Kronos 1991, an environmentalist association, informs us that there are a great deal of microorganisms some centimetres under the sand of the Italian coasts, from common dermatophytes to strepto-staphylococci. Therefore, besides beach mycoses so common as to be simply called “sea measles”, some other skin diseases, among them folliculites, are spreading.
Kronos’s researches didn’t include viruses but, according to what has already been said, it is evident for viruses, like HPV, to be able to survive together with bacteria and organic particles in the muggy climate of the sand.
