Wise men recognize omens and what they announce, so as snakes recognize snake way. (Miao-Lo)[1]
” Before great accidents take place in a city or in a province, there are signs forecasting or men foretelling them. I don’t know where they come from, but we can realize that, through ancient and modern examples, any serious accident never happened in a city or province which fortune-tellers or revelations or prodigies or other celestial signs had foretold. The cause of this, I think, must be perceived and interpreted by a man who has knowledge of natural and supernatural events; which we haven’t. Also it might be that, since this air, as some philosophers assert, is full of intelligences that foresee future things and having pity on men, they inform them with such signs so that they can be ready to defend themselves.” Niccolò Machiavelli[2]
It would be difficult to think of the great Renaissance essayist as the author of these words, and yet pragmatism, he is considered the forerunner of, urges him to observe reality with quiet and impartial eyes and the fact he can’t explain a phenomenon, doesn’t prevent him from accepting it only because he personally experimented it. Machiavelli says he isn’t qualified to explain how men and events can foretell future events, but he can’t deny this may happen. As to what will be the subject of this chapter, let’s concentrate our attention on the concept of intelligences; after depriving it of any religious or anyhow supernatural interpretation, we will try to explain that men and events, who can anticipate what will happen in the future, exist. It’s easy for us modern people to accept a scientist can foresee future events like climate changes or the consequences of the latter, it’s much more difficult for us to admit that the same events may be anticipated by prophecies of men of a remote time and with few or without qualifications about the technical aspect of the events they had predicted.
In this chapter we’ll try to prove that Machiavelli’s intelligences, concerning future drastic climate changes on the planet earth and the consequent environmental catastrophes, may be either scientists’ forecasts or prophecies of wise men or even of simple young shepherds.
Science is the true religion of our time and western world: together with its daughter, technology, it promises happiness to all men. Every self-respecting religion promises the same to its faithful, science does so with its practical application: technology.
At the beginning of this century there were a lot of people who thought science and technology should have made man happy. Not even two world wars, considered more as a necessary evil towards progress, had affected this conviction. At the beginning of the new millenium men start doubting progress may give them happiness and technology, alone, may cause, at least, as many problems as the ones it solves.
Any religion may be nearly perfect, but man is the one who applies it and man is never perfect. Like all other religions also science comes from man and inherits his defects[3] from him.
Any faith, science included, when passes from theory to practice, becomes, in man’s hands, something completely different from the original idea mostly originated from enlightened men’s mind.
Many religions, science included, turn, over time, into power and interest and, as we know, men are ready for anything for power and interest. The party that are in power assert they are the only ones who can correctly apply the principles of a religion or also science; over time the party withdraw into themselves, deny the original spirit of researech which caused the birth of that religion or that science and establish religious or scientific dogmas and to defend them they are ready for anything, even to kill, since their defence means to defend their power.
The original spirit of a science or a religion mostly comes from the mind of men who are seriously interested in their fellow men.
Over time this spirit, like every organism, gets old and falls ill. Even if old and ill science and religion can survive themselves for centuries, but now they have no value for society any longer and above all they cannot absolutely give men happiness.
Like an egoist and mean old man who is never ready to die, an aged religion survives by feeding itself with the suffering of million people. This is what is partly happening also to modern science which started with Enlightenment in ‘700 to enlight the darkness of the past. Its divinities: rationality and progress have weakened and have become the slaves of other Gods like “God Money”.

[3] Man’s defects (avidity, anger, stupidity) still link up with his animal origin (life fundamental obscurity of Buddhist religion). Original Sin that set man free from a blind obedience to the Laws of Nature, gave him the illusion of having completely overcome such origin. The great impetuosity of animal instincts, free from that control Nature exercises on such instincts in all other animals, originated so many human pains which would be otherwise inesplicable.
