Tiziano-Vecellio-Lucretia-Suicide
Suicides for love are quite different. They are carried out mostly by adolescents who cannot accept the infidelity of their partner or the decision of breaking off a relationship. Sometimes it’s enough a trivial quarrel, sometimes the breaking off a relationship.
At fourteen years of age the girl can find out he is married and has got two children, or the man, forty-five years old, married with three children, commits suicide when his wife and his very young (fifteen years old) student lover’s father discover and cut the relationship off.
The parents of the guy can oppose the relationship”urging” to suicide because the origins of the girl are too humble. The twenty-five-year old man from Bari decides to die with the exaust gas of his car. In this case the “experts” were a judge who committed the boy’s parents for trial for abuses inside the family, kidnapping( they had locked the boy at home without a telephone) and threats towards the girl. This way the judge would have tried to identify the ones who were “responsible” of the suicide. This hypothesis is inaplicable since Bari itself is the land of “fuitina”, the elopement followed by the inevitable shotgun wedding, what the boy, instead of committing suicide, could have done esily enough.
To conclude the category of “suicides for love” with suicides for “refusal”, we find out that love is little involved in the will of committing suicide. People kill themselves at thirtteen years of age because an entertainment organizer in a village doesn’t notice them.
Since a twenty-eight-year-old girl wasn’t reciprocated by”her“teacher, she swallowed some barbiturates; after the admission to the hospital in Pescara she wakes out of her torpor, steps over the window of the room in the hospital and throws herself from the sevrnth floor.
There are suicides for refusal among homosexuals, too: a female footballer, rejected by a team mate, hanged herself at twenty years of age. The girl, before inserting her head into the noose, for safety’s sake, had cut her veins as well.
One of the most terrible aspects of suicide for abandonment is “extended” suicide: he who intends committing suicide carries it out only after eliminating other lives, in Italy, mostly, his own family. Innocent victims of extended suicide, are above all children, while father and mother are the second[2]. Some cases of extended suicide have concerned young women that, just after giving birth to their child, have committed suicide together with their babies. Anyone who knows post-partum depression can realize how strong the hormonal storm may be and the consequent depression upsetting these young lives, above all if they are already predisposed[3].
In every case of extended suicide where women with their children are protagonists, there is always a strong and well-known depressive syndrome.
Most women who killed their children and committed suicide, had shown depressive crises.
Lately Italy has conformed to the statistics of the other countries, particularly the United States, for suicides committed by mothers after killing their own children.
This cateory may be assimilated to the one of killer mothers described in the paragraph “Pollicino still lives here” from the chapter “The Rebellious Angels”, with the only difference that in the latter mothers survive very well to the killing of their children by denying the evidence and often succeeding also in getting away with the judicial proceedings.
In some cases, the adult daughter has psychic problems and anorexia, and extended suicide turns into a suicidal pact between mother and daughter.
Also an “honour” suicide can be turned into an extended suicide when, being accused by her fellow villagers of working for an erotic line, a woman from a village near Varese shoots herself together with her eight-year-old daughter at the foot of the war memorial.
The use of firearms is rare enough among women and they commit extended suicide by hurtling down, strangling, choking, drowning their children and hanging themselves or poisoning with the exaust gas of a car.
When her daughter was struck down by an ictus,to commit an extended suicide mother chooses her nephew only guilty, if we can say so, to have kidneys with a congenial malformation.
Pistols and guns are the means more frequently used by men, while their partner, wife or fiancèe, is often included in the extended suicide they commit.
Sometimes, as the case of an Algerian policeman, extended suicide can concern, besides his three children younger than three years of age, also the two of a woman next door and the means used may be different: a pistol for his wife, a moving car for his chilren and the ones of the woman next door, the wheels of a truck-trailer under which he throws his car, for himself.
The only wrong of the victim of an extended suicide may be the one of having been chosen as the object of desire.
There has often been also a marriage relationship or not, Heaven help the woman who decided to break it off: the consequence may be death, perhaps together with her father who intervened to defend her. Youngest people aren’t even free of this risk and it may happen that a twenty-one-year-old girl, after a trivial quarrel with her fiancè of twenty-six years of age, is dragged to die under the wheels of a subway train.
[1]But when, after the “fuitina”, a thirty-seven-year-old shepherd from Palermo realizes that the girl
(twenty years old) is pregnant, first he starts a terrible fight with his beloved, then he fires a shot at his throat.
[2]On the grave of his father who died five years before of a cancer and buried in the graveyard of Pinerolo (Torino), Marino Raviol shot his seventy-three-year-old mother and committed suicide with a shot at his head. The man, fifty-three years old, married, had been seen by a psychiatrist who had prescribed him some psychomedicines (never taken).
[3]But recently (December 2001) when her partner doesn’t intend to accept his responsabilties and shirks them, a very good bank clerk, seven months pregnant, hangs herself two days before Christmas. Not being able to refer to post-partum depression, the psychiatrists deduce, strangely, loneliness had killed the woman: “Being abandoned while waiting for another life means that there is no room on the world for me. While everybody, apparently, has a good time, she sends a message of extreme loneliness”.
