Also a disease is a valid reason, but they are often very curable illnesses. Very often they aren’t even illnesses, one convinces himself he is ill and it’s all. Doctors’ assurances are of no use.
Depression convinces us we are ill as well as drives us to suicide.
The hospital, where his wife is hospitalized for meningitis, becomes the site of an insane flight, from the fifth floor, of a man that involves his eleven-year-old son who desperately resists. The boy had previously survived two serious heart operations. It ‘s useless saying the doctors, on informing the man about his wife’s state of health, had greatly reassured him about the prognosis.
On his initiative a cardiopath child” suffering from depressive crises” commits suicide at twelve years of age: he should have been operated a few days after.
Also TBC, even if perfectly curable, may be sufficient for a suicide. Then if for a Peruvian woman, who gave birth twenty days ago, things get complicated when post-partum depression acts in synergy with the fact that the woman knows people die of TBC in Perù, she can die.
There may be also the case in which a partner is taken seriously ill, but it isn’t the illness to cause the suicide: a girl tells her fiancè she intends to leave him since she is suffering from a serious cancer. The latter doesn’t believe her because he thinks she is in love with another one. After ascertaining the truth the young man, owing to remorse, eventually succeeds in committing suicide after two failed attempts.
Taking a bribe was a confirmation of their own success for politicians and public administrators and a bribe was and is considered the motor and propellant of our economy. When “tangentopoli[1] burst out, inquires and trials caused some suicides, the most famous of them and ” the one people talked a lot about” was Raul Gardini’s, an industrialist, but, as to the dimension of the phenomenon, suicides were very few.[2].
An economic cause may be absolute or relative.
The lack of money is for an unemployed person. For the one who was working till that moment a sudden poverty may be such as to cause starvation for himself and his family or only a change in the standard of his life.
If this condition concerns a whole category may rouse a real wave of suicides, as it happened among the soldiers and officers of the ex- Red Army, ex-URSS, reduced to starvation after many months without a salary.
Competition and crisis, need to dismiss one’s employees, wrong Stock Exchange investments, in short a relative poverty is, as a suicide cause, always associated with an evident depression, often under medical treatment before the event.
It is important to remember that a depressed person generally needs more stimuli, even economic, compared to other people and stands less probable frustrations.
An example may be the one of an American judge who, after seeking fulfilment in gambling and losing a fortune, shot in his mouth in a Nevada casino. In his story there are all the features of a masked depression and fought with any arm, lawful and not: gambling, frauds to his partners, money stolen from the bosses of drug traffic, flight from house arrests ( by cutting the elettronic bracelet keeping him under surveillance).
Taxes may be a problem, it’s like that for many people in Italy, but that they can induce a person to hang himself after Christmas dinner leaves us perplexed.
The mixture of depression, taxes, usurers becomes a lethal cocktail in periods of crisis.
A forced retirement, above all if it is precocious, con be associated, as a suicide reason, with unemployment, while a “natural” retirement, if it is together with depression, makes us think of preesistent causes.
Even psychiatrists aren’t immune from suicide. In China the founder of an antisuicide association, who had saved hundreds of aspiring suicides, finally committed suicide. On the other hand if everybody knows one can be a doctor to exorcise his fear of diseases, a psychiatrist, to solve his own psychic poblems, also on a depressive base, can set up an antisuicide association hoping to overcome his unconscious propension to suicide.
[1] Inquires and trials concerning corruption in political and industrial world.
[2] An absolute suicide will concerns also this category: being upset about the arrest of one of his colleagues, during ” tangentopoli”, an administrative clerk tries to cut his veins; when hospitalized,2 he commits suicide by throwing himself from a window.
