It’s immediate the analogy with the suicide phenomenon in still surviving primitive tribes, with the suicide epidemic among Parisian “flicks”(policemen) and with the suicide choice in some animals.
The “Guarani” are people that 200 years ago had 40% of Southern Mato Grosso at their disposal and at present are shut up in an area which is lower than 1% of the country: 9500 Indios in a reserve of 3500 hectares, a ridiculous space for those who were accustomed to the vastness of forests and prairies.
In 1994, twenty-four of them committed suicide, the year after thirty-six, by hanging themselves, swallowing poison or cutting their throats.
In a decade suicides were one hundred eighty-three. 40% of them weren’t yet sixteen, 75% were female. After becoming slaves to the whites, the “Guarani” don’t have forests where to go shooting any longer or lands to be cultivated. Men live as slaves to white people, young girls are forced to become prostitutes to survive.
More than genetic depression of a single individual we can speak of ethnic depression, as if all the “Guarani” were people genetically unsuited to survive in the civilization of the whites.
Instead of overpopulation, in this case, overcrowding may be considered as a suicide cause since the territory, where the “Guarani” live, isn’t enough for their type of culture: ” I’ve no more room” a young man of theirs wrote on the sand, before hanging himself.
Even the mysterious tribe that, in a remote part of Amazonia, rebelled against the aggression of white people has no more room: they appear, all of a sudden, completely naked, attack farmers with their arrows and disappear after every attack. Three of them have already been killed by arrows with the wooden point dipped in the deadly poison of a tropical toad. All this should be caused because three of them were killed in 1996 by agents of “Funai”, the Brasilian Government Body which should see to Indios.
Where rebellion is possible there is aggression, where there isn’t, suicide.
Also in animal world people start speaking of “suicides” like the”one” that occurred on the Western coasts of the Australian island of Tasmania, where sixty-five cetaceans stranded. The explanation of this ” mass animal suicide” was that their sense of direction couldn’t point out, any longer, the progressive reduction of the depth of the water.
Another episode is the one concerning 101 dolphins beached on the famous island of Tortuga, in Venezuelan Caribbean seas.
Experts recognize mass suicide for whales, but not for dolphins, and the experts of the National Fund of Ichthyic Investigation and the Museum of Cuminà Sea went to the beach for an autopsy to two cetaceans hoping to understand the causes of their gesture.
Like the tribes of Indios or the young people of 1968 protest movement also animals may have a valid alternative to suicide: aggression against those who deprive them of their living space.
A shoal of sardines succeeded in such an unprecedented enterprise as to sink a big fishing boat in the Atlantic Ocean and so they could escape the capture. Geir Nikolaisen, the forty-nine-year-old Norwegian commander of the boat, after being rescued, declared desmayed:” I’ve been going fishing since I was fourteen, but I’ve never seen anything like that”.
A whole shoal of sardines had got into the nets of a 19 metre long Norwegian fishing boat, the Steinholm, and it seemed it were their end, but this time sardines didn’t surrender: at an invisible agreed signal they submerged all together at the same time succeeding in turning the boat over. The attempt of the crew to cut the nets failed since sardines acted with great rapidity and determination.
So as for viruses we spoke of intelligence since, by following the laws of nature, they share it, equally we can speak of an intelligence of sardine-nature that opposes to a mass extintion[1].
Another example of suicide as the only possibility against an external aggression one cannot oppose, is the one of the epidemic of suicides among Parisian “Flicks”
Having to defend an invisible boundary line that, in banlieues, separates the traditional inhabitants from the extracommunity invaders”, they cannot do the only one possible thing to defend this line: to kill the”intruders”. Instead of contesting their task because it’s wrong and anyway impossible on both sides, practical and moral, maybe ignorant of the contradiction implied in what is required to them, they commit suicide. If they “could”, instead of committing suicide, they would probably kill the invaders [3],[4],[5].
[1] To destroy a whole shoal of sardines prevents their subsequent reproduction and so a sea repopulation of this species. Natural phenomenons like new viral epidemics or the sinking of the Norwegian fishing boat should show some profound analogies intended to prevent man from replacing his genes to the ones of all other species, reproducing excessively or exterminating whole animal populations. This way Nature would oppose the destruction of life on earth from man.
[2] French suburbs, particularly in Paris.
[3] No doubt nobody thinks Parisian “flicks” should kill extracommunity people of urban suburbs, but pretending from authorities to control, without violence, the great mass of young people in the suburbs-reserves of Paris, is ingenuous or hypocrite. If paradoxically “flicks” were so numerous as to have, as regards extracommunity people, the same numerical superiority the whites have in Mato Grosso as to the “Guarani”, extracommunity people should commit suicide. Vice versa “flicks”, being numerically quite inferior as to extracommunity people, have no choice but suicide. Certainly if they consciously could perceive this contradiction they would face the problem on a political-social point of view or simply would change their job.
[4] The suicide epidemic of Parisian “flicks” has a historical precedent in the Foreign Legion in Morocco. A dispatch from one of the isolated blockhouses in the desert arrived at the city headquarters:Devet, a legionnaire killed himself by hanging with his mule’s ropes”. Few days after another one arrived: Crouex, a legionnaire dead-stop.Hanged himself with his mule’s ropes-stop then another dispatch and one more as long as the headquarters brought help to check a suicide epidemic which would have decimated the blockhouse: it was cafard,” a whole of despair, boredom, stress and madness, this black insect entering the soul drives definitely to suicide.
[5] Like in the blockhouses of the Foreign Legion, cafard materialized in the Police Station of Forte dei Marmi, a detachment with thirty persons on the roll and twenty-three on active duty. Within few years there were six suicides among the agents on duty, the first of them included the suicide’s two children. Undoubtedly a high percentage if we think that in Italy in 1993 suicides among policemen were eighteen in all.
