And already the lower part of his stomach was now getting cold, when he( Socrates ) unveiled his face which had already been covered and said again these words( the last ones he ha pronounced):”Oh, Critone, we owe Asclepius a cock; give him it,and try not to forget it”[1]
( Plato, Phaedo LXVI )
According to our thesis “rebellious angels”are also and above all suicide genes, but the vastness and complexity of the phenomenon epidemic of suicides is so big that we thought right to devote it a separate chapter.
To mantain and above all demonstrate suicide may be one of the factors regulating population and acting with a mechanism at negative retroaction on a genetic base, linked to overpopulation, is very difficult, but not impossible.
If we examine the phenomenon in its complexity, we can realize some features quite new as to the past:
-Suicides are definitely increasing both in an absolute sense and in percentage[2].
-In those who commit it there is often a clear suicidal intention.
-Instead of causing disapproval and fright suicide is trendy and urges a lot of people to emulation.
-“Explanations” of suicides, especially the ones given by psychiatrists, are all different, linked more to the single case than to the phenomenon as a whole, that is an epidemiological study of the phenomenon is lacking.
-“Reasons” that would drive to suicide are so many, often contrasting with one another,as to make us think that motivations actually may be others and above all it is more important to look for an explanation of the phenomenon as a whole rather than of every single case.
–The only certain data are the genetic ones linked to depression.
-More cases of suicide happen in the same family.
-Besides a clear suicidal intention, there is often a strong intention to eliminate besides his own genes even the ones he produced ( children ) or those of the person who contributed to produce them ( wife ).
–Suicidal Pacts among more people make us think of a collective phenomenon more than of single individual cases.
-The usefulness of suicide is so officially recognized that some American states have it committed with the social assistance.
-From an epidemiological point of view suicide phenomenon has confirmations and coincidences in the animal world.
–Suicide age diminishes more and more, that is people younger and younger commit suicide.
-Suicide isn’t used militarly as it was in the past, that is an extreme refusal of the vanquished to be subjected to winners[3],but as a very effective offensive weapon to base the whole strategy on.
-In the last few years suicide has become a social phenomenon so widespread as we can speak of a real culture of suicide.
The most evident datum and a very certain one is the great increase of the number of suicides
For some years the increase has been constant and, limiting the observation to Europe, it concerns countries like England, France and Portugal which are on the top of the classification and countries on the bottom like Italy.Such increase is due both to the entry,in the calculation, of categories like the one of young and very young people, till now scarcely represented, and to the increase in percentage of suicides in groups, like the one of prisoners where suicide was nearly “normal”.
In Italy, under 21 years of age, suicide is the second cause of death, after road accidents.
As to all the suicides, from ’84 to ’94, in the people, among 18 and 29 years of age, there was an increase from 6,0 to 9,5% and from 0,5 to 1,7% in the people from 0 to 18 years of age.
In America, among very young people, suicide is the first cause of death. In France, every year, the phenomenon causes 3000 dead exceeding the ones of road accidents with an absolute increase of 9% from ’91 to ’94.
In 1997 and 1998, in Italy, more than nine persons a day committed suicide, in 1999 more than eight, in 1995, in Rome, 166 persons.
[1] Socrates, in the point of dying, considers his own suicide a recovery from “le mal de vivre”and asks his friends to make a sacrifice to Aesculapius (Asclepius for the Greek),God of Medicine.
[2]In the differnt classes of age and of “categories “of suicides.
[3] An example for all, the one of the Jewish sect of the Zeloti. After rising against the Romans and being besieged by the latter in the fortress of Masada, in the Sinai desert, from 70 to 73 A.D., when they realized their enemies were about to conquer the city, the Zeloti committed a mass suicide. To do this they drew lots ten of them whose task was to kill all the others; the ten left drew lots the one among them should have to kill the nine left and then commit suicide. When finally Flavio Silva’s Tenth Legion entered the fortress with his 10,000 men found 960 corpses. Only two women and five children had survived the 967 inhabitants: since they didn’t want to die they had shelt ered in the dungeons of the fortress and told about the mass suicide.
