At this point suicide pacts and mass suicides linked to varied and mysterious sects prove more understandable. The last case took place in California and concerns 39 followers of the Higher Source. A mixture of technology and medioeval beliefs revised from a modern viewpoint is peculiar to this sect. The followers, all computer experts, work hard, earn well, don’t drink, don’t smoke and what is important, practise chastity, therefore they don’t reproduce.
Under their leader’s guidance, a father John, a gloomy(depressed?) fellow of seventy years of age, they believe they are angels coming from other planets. For this reason their site ( the analogy with the “Guarani” is singular) isn’t on this earth. Therefore they are looking forward to moving to other planets.
The pretext is offered by the passing of Ale comet behind which, with their spyglasses, they think they see a spaceship that will take them to other planets. The subsequent mass suicide[1], like many individual ones, is organized with great accuracy. They take even turns: as the first are drinking vodka cocktails with sleeping pills, the others help them to die by inserting their heads in plastic bags gripping them around their necks; bags that, later, are taken away from the ones still living and so only the last two are found with their heads still inserted in plastic bags.
Also in this case experts try to point out the specific problem: a sect, a mystic religious belief, a blind obedience to the leader, a wrong use of new technologies. From our point of view the event, set in a general suicide epidemic, finds a logical position. Similar episodes have regularly followed one another in the last few years. An unusual mass suicide of the initiates of Sun Temple went on so long as four years after Luc Jouret’s death, their guru, the followers continued committing suicide.
The very famous episode of the mass suicide of 84 people led by David Koresh, a guru, happened in Wako Texas in 1993. Before the end Koresh and his followers engaged the police in a five day battle. In the event of this, the leaders of the sect had already got ready by storing up a great quantity of arms and munitions in their blockhouse. Also in this case we have a rebellion-suicide preceded and disguised as a rebellion-war.
Sometimes there is also a hint of a rebellion-protest inside the same sect before a mass suicide. In 1978 when Jim Jones, the founder of People Temple, told 911 members about the decision of autoannihilation of the whole sect with cyanide, some followers rebelled and a couple of them could even fly away. The leader had taken the decision of the suicide when he had realized he had lost any possibility of expansion and success and when rebellion was already spreading inside the sect itself.
[1] A curious parody of this situation took place at Batilly near Briey in North Western France where eleven garden dwarfs were found hanged. In order to explain the collective suicide the dwarfs” left a note” where they say“they intended to abandon this cruel world to get to the Sect of submitted dwarf Temple”.The Liberation Front of garden dwarfs, active in France, has recently made converts even in Italy.
